The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is also known as the "Processor" and
is the main control unit of the computer and the centre of intelligence.
The CPU or Processor determines the performance of the computer in conjunction
with the memory.

Battery
The life of a laptop battery ranges, however,
lithium ion batteries tend to last longer than
nickel-metal hydride ones. Additional batteries
can be purchased to boost battery life for laptops.
CD and DVD drives
CD-ROM drives (Compact Disc, Read-Only-Memory) are an adaptation of
CD's that are designed to store computer data in the form of text and graphics, as well as hi-fi stereo sound and allow you to read them. CD/DVD-RW drives (read-write) allows you to burn and create your own CD's or DVD's
in addition to reading them. CD/DVD drives maybe built-in or attachable.
External drives
External drives are used for additional storage, media-burning and connect into your laptop via a cable. External drives are more common when buying an ultraportable laptop that lacks a built-in drive due to size and weight.
Graphics Memory
Graphic Memory refers to dedicated video or graphical memory in addition to the main memory. If you plan to use your laptop heavily for graphical files and multimedia content you should look for dedicated graphic memory, separate from the main memory and gamers should look for 3 Dimensional graphic cards.
Hard drive
Hard drives (HDD) are the primary devices that read, write and store data. Depending upon the amount of data you wish to store will determine your hard drive requirements. The hard drive discs rotational speed will also influence performance of a laptop, the higher the speed the faster the performance.
Memory
Memory, sometimes referred to as RAM (Random Access Memory), is a group of chips that function as the computers main workspace and stores memory internally within the computer. Memory, or RAM, is an important resource as it determines the size and number of programs that can be run at the same time, as well as the amount of data that can be processed instantly. Memory is typically one of the first specifications users want to upgrade so easy-to-access memory slots will help increase the laptop useful lifetime.
Modem
Modems are the most common form of PC Card for telecommunication requirements such as dial up, ADSL and broadband connectivity. Most laptops have a built-in modem, which means your PC card slots are free for other uses. It is worth considering a laptop with a built-in modem to give you the choice of connectivity in the future even if you do have the requirement today.
Operating System
The Operating System is the master control program that runs the
computer and manages all the other programs in a computer such as applications
and software packages. The operating system sets the standards for all
application programs that run in the computer.
PC Card
A PC card is the
size of a credit-card and plugs into your laptop and provides a variety
of connection options; such as modems, network adapters, security cards
and memory cards. Most laptops have in-built PC cards, however, one PC
Card slot is sufficient for most users.
Screen
Most laptops have
LCD screens (liquid-crystal displays), which
vary in size from 12.1 inches (standard) to 17 inches (widescreen). LCD's
screens are measured diagonally and provide improved quality in terms
of brightness, colour and sharpness. The larger the screen, the higher
the maximum resolution and the more information you can view at once.
Sound Card
Most PC laptops have
built-in sound and built in microphone, therefore the focus relates to
the audio connection ports available. If you are wanting to link to external
speakers, a home stereo or an MP3 player you should consider a laptop
that has line output and input jacks.
Warranty
Warranty comes in
the form of the manufacturers warranty (normally 1 year) and extended
warranty (up to 3 years), which can be purchased additionally to cover
repairs and replacement parts. |
